Healing from anxiety, trauma and overwhelm

Janie Keddie

BSc (Hons), MSc, MBACP, ASMCOSCA

I believe therapy should be shaped around you — not the other way around. Different things help different people at different times.

As a pluralistic counsellor and psychotherapist, I honour your uniqueness and welcome the insights, experiences, and preferences you bring to therapy. I’m committed to building a real relationship — one based on collaboration, respect, and care.

Sometimes that means talking things through. Other times, we might explore what’s happening in the body, listen to different parts of the self, or work creatively when words aren’t quite enough. However we work, it will be at your pace, and in a way that feels safe and right for you.

You deserve a space where you can show up as your full self. I offer inclusive, gender-affirming therapy, and welcome people of all identities with warmth and respect. If you’re trans, non-binary, queer, or anywhere on the LGBTQIA+ spectrum, you are safe and seen here.

Help when you need it

Deciding to heal is an act of bravery: it takes courage to change patterns of thought, feeling and behaviour. This is especially true if current-day events are echoing situations in the past. The journey towards wholeness is made easier by having a reliable companion who can help you stay on track and avoid pitfalls.

Creating safety to explore

It may initially feel daunting to open up to a stranger, so we will go at the pace that feels right for you and build trust.

The goal is to create a sense of safety so you feel able to explore the light and shade of your experiences, whether past or present. As a pluralistic therapist, my aim is for us to work in partnership, co-creating a therapeutic process that is tailored to your needs and personality.

I can draw on a range of approaches and encourage you to share your own ideas about what might help you. If the words don’t come easily, or talking isn’t enough, we can use creativity or somatic approaches to gain insights and process feelings. You are the expert on what we need to look at and when: this is your healing journey.

My approach

I take a flexible, collaborative approach to therapy. Rather than sticking to one method, I draw from a range of approaches — including person-centred, body-based (somatic), creative and trauma-informed ways of working — depending on what feels most helpful for you.

Some people like to talk things through. Others find it useful to notice what’s happening in their body, work with metaphor and imagery, or explore things creatively. We can use a mix of these, in a way that feels comfortable and meaningful to you.

I also often support people to explore different “parts” of themselves — for example, the inner critic, the part that feels anxious, or the part that wants to hide. These parts often carry valuable information, and learning to listen to them with compassion can help create more space, choice and ease.

Whatever shape our sessions take, my aim is to offer a grounded, safe space where you feel respected and supported. We’ll go at your pace, and focus on what matters most to you.

Practialities - availability and booking

I offer medium and long term therapy to suit your needs. Appointments are available both daytime and evening, with a limited number of weekend slots. It’s generally helpful to have regular appointments on the same time and day where possible, but there’s also scope to fit around your schedule.

I usually recommend weekly sessions to begin with while we get to know each other, build the therapeutic relationship and discover what methods are best for you. Once work is underway, clients sometimes choose to meet fortnightly or at another frequency that best suits that stage of their healing process.

If you're feeling unsure about counselling, you're not alone. I also offer a range of gentle, creative and body-based options that can be shaped around what feels manageable for you. If this is you, do contact me so we can have an chat. My free 20 minute introductory calls are chance to explore whether therapy is right for you at this time, and perhaps find ways to help you be comfortable to go ahead.

Fees

I offer a free 20 minute exploratory consultation so you can get a sense of how we might work together, and be confident that we are a good fit before booking a session. Please feel free to contact me, and I’ll be happy to arrange this with you.

I charge £65 for counselling sessions which are a full hour in length. This allows you time to settle into a session with space for reflecting and grounding before you return to the rest of your day. We will have regular reviews to discuss your progress and consider whether you might benefit from more sessions or are ready to move on by yourself.

I ask that you be mindful of my booking policy. Payment is due when we confirm your appointment, and I have a 48 hour cancellation policy. There’s no charge for appointments changed or cancelled with 48 hours notice, but otherwise the full fee is payable. In the unlikely event that I have to cancel a session, you will not be charged.

Services

Recovery from trauma

I support people recovering from trauma using a science-based yet creative approach that combines body-based techniques with talking therapy to build coping skills, process the past, and reclaim the future.

Coping skills tailored to you

If you're feeling overwhelmed by anxiety or intrusive thoughts, I offer short- or longer-term support using neurobiology-informed strategies to help you regain calm, control, and confidence.

Change & life transitions

Whether change is welcome or unexpected, I offer a steady, compassionate space to help you navigate life transitions, make sense of what’s shifting, and find solid ground in the in-between.

Soothing patterns of chronic anxiety

Chronic anxiety is what happens when your survival system gets stuck on high alert — but with the right support, your brain and body can learn to feel safe and settled again.

Weathering the storm

When life feels overwhelming, I offer a calm, compassionate space to offload what you’re carrying — so you don’t have to face the storm alone.

Finding your path after family estrangement

If you’re facing the silent grief of family estrangement — especially as a parent — I offer support to help you navigate the isolation, loss, and complex emotions that come with this deeply personal experience.

Working with parts of self

I help people heal inner conflicts and trauma using evidence-based parts work (IFS), supporting you to reconnect with your authentic self and restore balance from the inside out.

Harnessing creativity

I offer creative and ceremonial approaches — from journaling to fire rituals — to help you process life events and mark meaningful transitions in personal, healing ways.

Workshops & Training

I offer workshops on creative and body-based approaches to therapy — from polyvagal theory and somatic grounding to storytelling, labyrinth walking, and ritual — drawing on years of experience as a tutor, trainer, and speaker.

Taking the first step

If you’re ready to make a start, let’s talk. I offer a free 20 minute initial exploratory consultation by phone or over Zoom. This will give you chance to get a sense of who I am and whether I’m the right person for you. If we both feel there is a good fit, we can discuss what approach is best for you and take it from there.

All appointments are held online over a secure video connection.

Online sessions give you the flexibility to choose a location where you feel comfortable without the time and expense of travelling. Many clients find it easier to open up about problems when in the safety of their own homes, but you may choose another location where you feel secure and have privacy. This can be helpful if you move around a lot for work, the weather is poor, or you simply want to connect from different places that are meaningful to you. I work with clients throughout the UK, and overseas (excluding USA and Canada).
