Healing for heart and mind

Help when you need it

Deciding to heal is an act of bravery: it takes courage to change patterns of thought, feeling and behaviour. This is especially true if current-day events are echoing situations in the past. The journey towards wholeness is made easier by having a reliable companion who can help you stay on track and avoid pitfalls.

Creating safety to explore

It may initially feel daunting to open up to a stranger, so we will go at the pace that feels right for you and build trust.

The goal is to create a sense of safety so you feel able to explore the light and shade of your experiences, whether past or present. As a pluralistic therapist, my aim is for us to work in partnership, co-creating a therapeutic process that is tailored to your needs and personality.

I can draw on a range of approaches and encourage you to share your own ideas about what might help you. If the words don’t come easily, or talking isn’t enough, we can use creativity or somatic approaches to gain insights and process feelings. You are the expert on what we need to look at and when: this is your healing journey.

Janie Keddie

BSc (Hons), MSc, MBACP, ASMCOSCA

I am a pluralistic counsellor and psychotherapist, which means I’m rooted in the belief that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to therapy. Different things work for different people at different times. I honour your uniqueness, and welcome the insights, knowledge and preferences that you bring with you into therapy. I am committed to offering you an authentic relationship founded on collaboration, respect and care.

How we can work together

Our sessions will always focus on the issues that are important to you. I hope we can work together in a way that is tailored to your needs, personality and what you hope to gain from therapy. I can draw on a range of approaches, and you will have ideas of your own. Your therapy will incorporate our combined knowledge and experience, but you will always be in control of the pace and direction of your healing journey.

Fees

I offer a free 20 minute exploratory consultation so you can get a sense of how we might work together, and be confident that we are a good fit before booking a session. Please feel free to contact me, and I’ll be happy to arrange this with you.

I charge £65 for counselling sessions which are a full hour in length. This allows you time to settle into a session with space for reflecting and grounding before you return to the rest of your day. We will have regular reviews to discuss your progress and consider whether you might benefit from more sessions or are ready to move on by yourself.

If you want help to move forward, but are not sure that counselling is quite right for you just now, I also offer a range of other bespoke services which can be adapted to your needs. Do explore these to see if one of these alternative approaches might suit you.

Services

  • Looking towards the mouth of a cave with person emerging into the light.

    Recovery from trauma

I have a particular interest in working with people who have suffered trauma in their lives. I use the most recent developments in research-informed therapy; helping clients to stabilise and providing coping skills to manage symptoms. From that foundation, we can then safely address more difficult material before moving into meaning making and reclaiming the future. My approach is science based, but gives scope for creativity. It is said that “the body remembers”. We can use body-based (somatic) approaches such as movement, breath work and posture as well as more traditional talking/cognitive approaches to process trauma effectively and to bring lasting relief.

    Soothing patterns of chronic anxiety

There are times in life when we need our survival systems to be on alert to face a real and present danger; but when the threat is past, our systems should naturally settle to state of ease.

Chronic anxiety happens when your brain and body become stuck in emergency mode. You may recognise the uncomfortable, even intolerable, feelings of hypervigilance, ruminating thoughts, panic and avoidance. You may even feel numb, dissociated and frozen. These are some physical and behavioural signs of your sensitised survival mechanisms being in overdrive.

The good news is that the brain is capable of re-wiring and it is possible to retrain mind and body to feel safe and connected once more.

    Working with parts of self

It’s normal to have different parts to our personalities. However, when faced with extreme stress or trauma, parts can become trapped in painful roles or hold distressing emotions or memories. Although that helps us at the time to survive intolerable situations, the legacy may be feeling fragmented, torn by inner conflicts, dissociation, or missing memories of important times in your life.

For example, perhaps you recognise having a wounded inner child, self-critical, numbing, controlling, addictive or intellectualising parts - or not feeling fully present. The good news is that there are “no bad parts”, and working directly with them is a particularly effective way of bringing healing to where it’s most needed and helping your authentic self regain control of your life.

I have particular expertise in using evidence based approaches from IFS (Internal Family Systems) and parts work. My aim is to help you connect with your authentic 'Self'; free parts stuck in trauma time; overcome limiting patterns of behaviour and experience greater harmony within.

    Coping skills tailored to you

Perhaps you’re struggling with anxiety, stress, or intrusive thoughts. There is hope. Many of my clients report feeling much more in control of their lives as a result of learning skills and coping strategies to overcome problematic symptoms. Using insights from neurobiology, I can help you understand and respect why you may sometimes react in problematic ways. We will develop personalised methods to calm your mind and soothe your bodily reactions.

Some clients then choose to do further therapy at a time that is right for them. However, many people find that two or three sessions are enough to give relief and enable them to thrive once again.

  • Storm at sea, crashing waves, sunlight breaking through

    Weathering the storm

Perhaps you’ve in the middle of series of crises that leave you feeling overwhelmed and floundering. No matter how resilient you are in normal circumstances, everyone has limits. It may help you to have a safe place to offload about what you’re going through, safe in the knowledge that you won’t be judged. I can offer you a warm, supportive presence while you weather the storm and find your way to calmer waters.

    Harnessing creativity

I can help you with creative approaches such as guided meditation, arts & craft, drama, journaling or storytelling. I can introduce you to traditional healing practices such as walking the labyrinth, medicine wheels, and fire ceremonies.

You might want to create unique ceremony to come to terms with life events such as divorce or bereavement - and also to celebrate positive, but potentially stressful, transitions such as a new career or parenthood.

Please contact me if you wish to discuss this further.

    Transitions and change

There are times when we move into a new phase of life or way of being. It may be a divorce, new career, parenthood, change of location or milestone birthday.

Whether chosen or imposed on us, navigating change can be uncomfortable and brings a mix of emotions. It can help to have a reliable companion as you explore the light and shade of the new world you’re entering.

Please feel free to contact me for more information.

    Workshops & Training

You might want to attend one of my workshops on subjects such as practical applications of polyvagal theory, walking the labyrinth, somatic grounding techniques, making meaning through art, using story telling, matryoshka dolls, stones buttons and ceremony in clinical practice.

I enjoy helping people develop knowledge and skills through learning experiences. I have tutored counselling at both skills and post-graduate diploma levels, and am a guest-lecturer and speaker. I am an accredited trainer at counselling skills level with COSCA.

I am a founder member of The Creativity Gathering which is a group for therapists interested in creative approaches to share ideas and inspiration.

Taking the first step

If you’re ready to make a start, let’s talk. I offer a free 20 minute initial exploratory consultation by phone or over Zoom. This will give you chance to get a sense of who I am and whether I’m the right person for you. If we both feel there is a good fit, we can discuss what approach is best for you and take it from there.

All appointments are held online over a secure video connection.

Online sessions give you the flexibility to choose a location where you feel comfortable without the time and expense of travelling. Many clients find it easier to open up about problems when in the safety of their own homes, but you may choose another location where you feel secure and have privacy. This can be helpful if you move around a lot for work, the weather is poor, or you simply want to connect from different places that are meaningful to you. I work with clients throughout the UK, and overseas (excluding USA and Canada).
